The functional movement approach was designed to complement existing physical and chiropractic examinations. It serves as a model to efficiently and effectively integrate posture, muscle balance, and fundamental patterns of movement.
Many components comprise pain-free functional movement including adequate posture, range of motion, muscle performance, motor control, and balance. Impairment in one component could potentially alter functional movement, resulting in pain and discomfort.
Dr. Sara utilizes a technique called Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS) which is based in developmental kinesiology. This technique recognizes that we learn predictable movement patterns. When people begin to deviate from these innate patterns, they develop dysfunctions that can result in pain and tension. DNS strives to return people to their innate patterns in order to alleviate various acute or chronic symptoms.
Dr. Sara starts everyone with proper breathing function and progresses to ideal core stabilization and pressure management to build a strong foundation for movement and pain/tension reduction. Proper breathing mechanics and core stabilization are necessary, whether you are lifting toddlers all day long, hauling mulch around your yard, trying to nail crow pose in yoga or working on increasing your power clean weight. Once we get the core on point, we can begin looking at specific joints (shoulders, knees, etc) or specific movements (lifting, squatting, hinging, etc) depending on your chief complaints or goals.
